Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was born back in October 1956 near Garmsar in a village called Aradan in the province of Semnan. He is the fourth of 7 children, son of Ahmad and Khanom. His mother Khanon is believed to be a direct descendant of Muhammad, the Islamic prophet. At the age of four his family moved to Tehran and in 1976 enrolled the Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST), where according to his autobiography he ranked 132 out of 400,000 applicants. Later in 1997, he earned his PhD in transportation engineering and planning from the same university. According to his supporter he is a simple person that is characterized for being humble and modest. He is the father of two sons and a daughter.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is the 6th president of Iran or Islamic republic of Iran by its official name. He is considered to be the political leader of the conservative political groups in the country that have formed a coalition called Alliance of Builders of Islamic Iran. He was elected mayor of Tehran in 2003 where he was known for his efforts to bring back the hard line religiousness that his predecessors had departed away from in search of a more moderate government. In 2005 he won the elections with a 625% of the votes, becoming president on 3 August 2005.
He is, without a doubt a very controversial character, not only internationally but within his own country. As a matter of fact there have been repeated accusations in terms of a clear disregard for human rights and many economic lapses. Just to mention a few of his controversial decisions, we can talk about the year 2007 when he decided that the country needed to ration gas in order to reduce the fuel consumption of the country. He also reduced the interest rates that could be charged within his country in both, private and public banks. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was reelected back in 2009 through a highly questioned election process that was criticized by clerical authorities, other politicians and his opposition parties. As it was expected, hard international criticism was expressed as the results of the elections were far from being crystal clear.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is also known in the international scene for his harsh criticism of the United Kingdom, Israel and the United States. In the last few years tension between Iran and Israel has risen to dangerous levels that according to political analysts could end up in a war involving possibly the whole region. A very strong negative point against Ahmadinejad is his nuclear program, and the international sanctions that it has brought to his country and his people. There have been countless diplomatic efforts to stop Iran from having a nuclear program, but none of them have been successful as Iran led by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad follow his intentions of enriching uranium and possibly developing nuclear weapons that could jeopardize the whole middle east.
